As a physician specialising in Interventional Radiology, the comfort and sense of security my patients feel throughout their treatment journey is always my priority. Especially when it comes to diagnostic procedures like biopsies, one of the first questions that often comes to mind is, "Will I feel pain?" In this article, I want to detail the anaesthesia methods and pain management strategies we employ to ensure our patients' comfort during robotic biopsy procedures.
The Importance of Robotic Biopsy in Interventional Radiology and Pain Management
Robotic biopsy is a modern method that provides high accuracy with advanced imaging guidance, especially in situations requiring precise and targeted sampling, such as prostate biopsy. This method aims to minimise discomfort felt during the procedure, while also accelerating the patient's recovery process, thanks to its less invasive nature compared to traditional methods and its ability to offer millimetric precision in reaching the target tissue. Ensuring a pain-free prostate biopsy is one of the primary goals for Interventional Radiologists like myself.
Anaesthesia and Comfort: What to Expect During a Robotic Biopsy
Various anaesthesia protocols are applied to ensure patients do not feel pain during robotic biopsy. Please remember, as an Interventional Radiologist, I perform these procedures using minimally invasive approaches, prioritising the patient's utmost comfort. I am not a Urologist; however, precise biopsy sampling in the diagnostic process falls within my area of expertise.
Typically, in procedures such as robotic prostate biopsy, the following anaesthesia methods are preferred to ensure patient comfort:
Local Anaesthesia: A local anaesthetic agent is applied to the biopsy area using a fine needle. This numbs the region, completely eliminating any sharp pain that might arise from needle insertion. Patients may typically feel some pressure or movement, but this is more a sensation of awareness rather than pain.
Sedation (Conscious Sedation): In some cases, mild intravenous sedation may be administered to reduce patient anxiety and make the procedure more comfortable. This allows the patient to remain semi-awake, able to communicate with their surroundings but potentially not remembering uncomfortable details of the procedure or experiencing them less intensely. Sedation helps the patient to calm down and relax during the procedure.
Rarely and in special circumstances, general anaesthesia may be preferred, but most minimally invasive procedures like robotic biopsy are successfully and comfortably completed with local anaesthesia and/or sedation.

In the robotic biopsy process, patient comfort is enhanced not only with anaesthesia but also through environmental factors and communication:
Calm Environment: The procedure room is kept calm, warm, and in an atmosphere where the patient can feel comfortable.
Continuous Communication: Throughout the procedure, constant communication is maintained with the patient. Every step taken is explained, and the patient is encouraged to voice any discomfort they might feel. This increases the patient's sense of control and reduces anxiety.
Advanced Imaging: The precise imaging guidance of the robotic system prevents unnecessary tissue trauma, ensuring the biopsy needle reaches the target directly. This shortens the procedure time and consequently reduces the duration of potential discomfort the patient is exposed to.
Post-Procedure Expectations and Pain Management
Following a robotic biopsy, it is normal to experience mild soreness or sensitivity in the biopsied area. This can usually be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Our patients are provided with detailed information on what to pay attention to post-procedure and potential symptoms. Most patients can return to their daily activities within a short period.
